It's summer holiday time and you and your family have decided that you would like to have a touring holiday of the Scottish Highlands. The only complication is that your car is not really big enough but not a problem, you'll rent one from your local car hire company, which is advertising some very cheap deals.

When you get there of course you find cheap deals are all for tiny cars which are no more use than ornaments to you, and the price of a large car is absolutely uneconomic! Your friendly neighbourhood other has a spare car which is more than big enough for your needs, and he offered to lend it to you provided that you get it properly insured, and have it serviced at the end of the loan period. A very generous offer, and you jump at it.

You are well aware that although you have an insurance policy of your own car which covers you for any other vehicle, that cover is only the minimum required by law. This means that if you were to have an accident whilst driving your friends car the insurance company would not pay for any damage to it! As a responsible friend you are just not prepared to take this risk, so you go online, visit a short term car insurance website, fill in a very short form and pay for a fully comprehensive policy for two weeks by credit card. You can now legally drive your friends vehicle, which is protected by fully comprehensive cover.

If you decided to do so (and your friend agreed) you could even take the vehicle over onto the continent and drive it quite legally through any countries in the EEC, but in that event it would only be covered for third party only risks so again, like a good and careful friend, you would have taken the optional upgrade for fully comprehensive EEC usage. Just in case your eldest son wanted to drive a car whilst you were a little tired you could also have included him on the policy for a small extra premium. And finally, for complete peace of mind you could have taken out optional roadside assistance as well.

You could buy short term car insurance from here for anything between one day and 28 days, and use it for purposes such as driving a car back from an auction, testing a vehicle that you were thinking of buying, even taxing a vehicle that was temporarily laid up. You could cover a vehicle that belong to; you could cover a vehicle that belonged to someone else. If you had guests staying from any EEC country with full driving licences you could arrange for them to be insured for one of your vehicles, and some short term insurers would even extend this to people from Australia and New Zealand as well.

Premiums are competitive, it takes only a few moments to set up a policy online and all documentation can be downloaded immediately and printed out on your own printer so you would be able to have instant cover with no waiting for your insurance certificate to arrive through the post.

At long last the car insurance industry has come up to date!
